Magnificently You

Who was it that first whispered in your ears

That to be loved, you must be without flaw?

You are marvelous as you truly are,

Worthy by birthright, perfectly imperfect

Fueling movement forward with learned experience

Refusing to wallow in the mire of old grievances

Always, always turning your eyes toward hope.

Dearest soul, there is no need to linger

On the perceived failures of a past long past

They are tiny specks in a lifetime of upward climbing

And you are here now, standing with honest intention

Trying, learning, building, discerning,

As stunning as the stars

Beautifully refined, magnificently you.

Ferris Wheel

On the Ferris Wheel of life we hold our breaths

During the slow and tedious ascents

When our feet are dangling in nervous suspense

The excitement building with each steady rise

White-knuckled against the calm of the skies

Awaiting the moment when our hopes will sink

Trusting in our soul’s determination to survive.

There is that moment before the final descent

The whole world stretched out at our fingertips

A reverent but charged pause at the beauty of life

Before we plummet downward into terror and strife

Making our last confessions as we cling on tight

Sailing downward, stomachs lurching, lost in the night

Facing our worst fears in a rapid free-fall

Still reeling as our plunge into the depths begins to stall.

Then with a nervous laugh we admit that we survived

Hearts racing with hope, determinedly alive

Having outlasted the incomprehensible descent

We turn to each other a say: “Let’s try again!”

Healing Found Me

Healing found me with my back turned

Unassumingly seeping in through my unsettled feet

While I stared with sunken eyes at a future lost

Already determined that the hourglass of my life

Had reached its final clinging grains of sand.

I was hurting, dear soul, so very misaligned,

Believing I was exempt from experiencing joy

Grieving, breaking, sick, disintegrating

Unaware that goodness is what we all deserve.

Healing caught me completely offguard,

But in it, my soul reawakened slowly and steadily

Until pain became the catalyst of regeneration

Hope took its place as the steady ground beneath my feet

Suffering became a necessary stepping stone

Leading to the wondrous beauty of today.

Here and Now

There is no need to see the horizon ahead

Because here and now, there is hope

Love lifting our tired shoulders

Even as the way before us disintegrates.

There is no need to know what will be

Because here, in this wondrous moment,

There is peace settling into our souls

Even as tomorrow begins to unfold.

There is no need to fear the elusive unknowns

Because now, in the present, we are alive

Showing up with strong, resilient hearts

Even as the shadows tremble and quake.

The world as we know it has turned upside-down

And we are walking like strangers inside a foreign town

Familiar streets now laced with traces of fear

Trying to find our roots again in spaces once held dear

It’s like we are close to arrival but not quite yet

Hearts remembering traumas our brains attempt to forget.

Perhaps there are milestones even in the deepest dark

Like warm, glowing lights leaving a trustworthy mark

Through the looming fears and the unspoken depths

Like a hand to hold onto as we carefully hold our breaths

Attempt the healing process in the face of the unknown

Leading one another to the safety of our home.

Eventually we begin to accept the rhythm of life

Between the collision of each crashing wave

And the soft, peaceful lulls of recovery

Learning to balance ourselves in the in-between

Functioning even as the next wave builds

Exercising unwavering hope in what will be

While accepting the reality of future downfalls

That there is never an end to the waves that collide

Just like there is never an end to peace

There is both,

Simultaneously, counterbalancing

Time-limited but always repeating.

Slowly, we learn the patterns of the waves

Growing more accustomed to absorbing impacts

Embracing the calm without expectation

Rooting our feet and our hearts in the sand

With what matters most

What feels nurturing

What heals.

This is the natural way of things,

To weather the inevitable difficultues

While remaining forever hopeful

That in this perpetually flowing experience

We discover our own unexpected grit

Through exposure

Like the jagged piece of glass

Turned over and over again in the sea

Until it becomes a resplendent, polished stone.

Coming Back to Life

Coming back to life

From the cracks in the ground

Where I had buried my awakened self.

Rising slowly from the ashes

Tending to my own weeping wounds

Rescuing the parts of me long lost

To the contingencies of human experience.

Learning to savor life

Armored, apprehensive, autonomous,

But with a soft and tender heart

Healing from the inside out.

I am nothing if not teachable,

So teach me, dear soul,

Remove the blinders from my eyes

Bring awareness to this naive mind

Allow me the rewarding experience

Of transforming ignorance

Into openmindedness.

I am nothing if not reachable

So help me to reach you, dear soul,

Show me how to create a safe sanctuary

To invite the relief of painful processing

Welcoming in words unfiltered and brave

That I may see the gray area

That lies within your truth.
